A Special Musical Journey into the Baroque Era
The album Flute Sonatas & Adagio invites listeners on a unique musical journey into the Baroque era. Flutist Anna Reichhold and harpsichordist Agnieszka Skorupa bring to life works by Johann Joachim Quantz (1697-1773), who was not only one of the most renowned flute virtuosos of his time but also gained recognition as the court composer and flute teacher of Frederick the Great.
These works are presented authentically on replicas of historical instruments and recorded in high-resolution 3D audio. Quantz's extensive oeuvre includes approximately 200 sonatas, 300 concertos, and dozens of chamber music pieces.
Some of these compositions are revived in this album through a fresh and engaging interpretation that remains remarkably true to the historical performance practices of the Baroque era at Frederick the Great's court.
For these recordings, Anna Reichhold played a meticulously reconstructed replica of a traverso flute designed by Quantz, employing authentic Baroque performance techniques, including historically accurate articulations and ornamentation.
Additionally, both musicians worked with manuscript copies from Frederick Il's personal collection, preserved in the special holdings of the Music Department of the Berlin State Library - Prussian Cultural Heritage.
Through this approach, the performance faithfully captures the essence of the "Empfindsamer Stil" (Sensitive Style)-a musical aesthetic highly cherished in its time.
